Belles First Litter
First Week
July 12, 2013 - Belles starts panting heavily in the morning. She stopped. Later in the afternoon, she started again. CoCo, her mother, would have her puppies three days early. I just had a feeling! I decided to try and get some sleep Friday night. I woke up around 1:15AM.
July 13, 2013
At 1:35AM, Belles started barking for no reason at me. So, I set up my yoga mats next to her pen. I put my hand on her belly and the puppies were all really moving around. Belles would sit up and lay down going between heavy panting and lighter pannting. Then, she would look at her bottom. Each time she did this, I would expect a puppy to pop out. Nothing yet we decided. I could tell when she would start pushing. Then, her little tail would go up. At 1:55, her water broke. Around 2:30AM, I heard a strange noise. I looked and there were feet under Belles. I cut the first puppies' cord. The first puppy was a girl and turned out the only light colored puppy! She didn't latch onto Mom by herself, so I helped her. There is a new born puppy smell you learn to love. The puppy starts crying and Belles licks her so much - I thought she might hurt her. About 2:55AM, Belles starts acting like another one is coming. At 3:05AM, a little dark boy slipped out. I don't think Belles even knew she had him. I had a feeling I should look around and there he was in his sack. I took the sack off his mouth, and he started to breathe. He and the rest of the puppies were black when they were born. I cut his cord and put tied it off. I put him up to Mom, but he didn't know what to do. It seems she just didn't have much milk in yet. Puppies have to smell since they are born with their eyes closed. They also cannot hear for awhile. I gave him some purchased milk to get him going. Then, we waited 2 hours! Around 5:10AM the third black female came out. Belles was so intent on eating the after birth that she forgot the puppy. When they eat the after birth, the mother ends up chewing off the sac and cutting the cord. She was breathing on her own! At 5:25Am, Belles starts painting heavy again. At this time, two have learned how to latch onto Mom. At 5:35, a little black female had her head out of the sac. I went ahead and cut the cord while Belles cleaned her up. As the mother cleans up the puppy, she stimulates their breathing and helps them get any mucus out of their lungs.
My friend Debra, who is getting a pup from this litter, came over. Together we watched the puppies change color in their first hours. All dark ones started becoming lighter except for #6. About 9:30AM, they weighed 6.5 ounces each.

Today, they started gaining weight and started weighing between 8 to 9.5 ounces. During the day, the puppies weight would change up and down. Belles is a very protective mom and only food can get her to leave her puppies!

Dad - Diesel Comes to Visit
My friend brought Diesel home in October 2012. He was born in August 2012. He had 10 puppies in his litter! His pedigree shows he comes from Champions.
While he was growing up, I took puppy pictures of him (I will continue to post pictures of him.) We thought his color would be silver. At this time, he has silver, cream, and black tips in his coat. He came to visit around May 14, 2013. He was such a good little boy for living in his own special breeding house. He only had one accident in the house. He loved our attention and getting loved. Diesel and Belles stayed in the utility room together. He loved being near Belles and would become upset if she had to go outside without him. He is use to being around other Cairns and hasn't really been alone except for his private room in his breeding house. He was very timid about playing in our fence. He followed me everywhere. After about two days, he started wondering through the yard by himself. He had a good time playing with our Cairns!

We are now two weeks away from Belles delivering her first litter. For the last three weeks of her pregnancy, she has started putting on weight. Belles is a small Cairn. But the last time I weighed her, before having the puppies, she weighed 27 lbs! The puppies are growing in her tummy, and we are guessing she will have 5-6 puppies. Her mother (CoCo) had 6 in her first litter and 8 in her second litter. For her size, we only wanted 4 puppies!
PUPPY STAGE
When she was a puppy, I had to instruct the puppy sitter not to put their fingers or hands in her mouth. She liked to lick hands and enjoying chewing fingers. I have figured out not to wear hand lotion - this can cause the licking to begin. Everytime she would start licking or chewing, I would put a toy or chew in her mouth - this way she learned not to chew on people. I never let any puppy chew on shoes in the puppy stage - just take the shoes away.
Puppies go through two teething stages. While teething, she enjoyed playing with ice - the ice can really entertain them. Remember to take the ice away when they get their adult teeth. You don't want them to ruin their new teeth! Belles really didn't chew on things until after her teething period, and it was due to frustration when she couldn't go outside and play all day. We have wrought iron gate which Belles could get through easily, and I had to go with her outside to play. Now, I have a great solution to the wrought iron fence to keep them inside and can trust them to not wonder through the large gaps in the fence.
As a puppy, she would moonwalk when you picked her up. She enjoyed biting Flopie's tail. Her right hind leg would move during a belly rub. She figured out how to take the tie off the puppy pens and plot her escape (she was great at chewing)! Like all Cairns, she was able to squeeze her body through anything. She seemed to be like Radar (half brother from CoCo's first litter) as a puppy and wanted to get out of the gate between the utility room and kitchen all the time. To this day, she charges through the gate when I start to open it - opposed to the other dogs who wait for me to open the gate. This is still a training opportunity!
Around January 2, 2012, she pick up an awful habit (like other puppies). She started with playing with poop. She moved to eating poop - this is not unusual. I believe it has to do with their food and not getting enough ingredients in their food their body needs. At this time, you might need to change food. It seemed if she was hungry, she just pooped. This is one good reason to pick up the poop! Unfortunately, she did this every time I was out of the room. Most puppies are very sneaky! In the 12th week of life, shredding the potty paper became fun for her. In fact, this became the start of a very destructive mode. I had sheets down in her pen. The pen kept moving as the sheets were pulled this way and that way. I had to lay bricks down to keep things in order. Digging on the old sheets became great fun for her. She stopped liking ice and preferred raw hides. She became very restless and loved chewing boxes up. New little Cairn puppies need exercise and play. When I would see these signs, it was time to go outside and play.
She loves to hop on the back of the sofa and lay on the sofa arm. She would look out the window and watch all the people and dogs go walking on the sidewalk (before her TV days).
While at Julie's farm (we went out to introduce her to Diesel), she almost ended up in the chocolate pond with the ducks. I was able to stomp on her very, long leash before she was able to dive into the pond! If she had made her goal, I would have had one messy dog to ride home to Tyler. She was stopped just short of the pond!

SOUNDS
On January 1, 2012, I noted she found her voice! She was so quiet before then. I was wondering if she could bark. Well, Flopsie taught her how to bark when they went outside. I would let her go outside by herself as a little kid. To this day, she is very quiet when outside alone. Belles loves to just sit on the porch and watch everything going on outside in the back yard.

We just took her to West Texas a week before her delivery. On the way to West Texas, she made a new sound when I got out of the car - like a little whine (July 2, 2013). My husband said she did this every time I left the car. She watched him like a hawk when he would get out to get gas. Cairns are very observant animals. You aren't able to get away with
anything!
PERSONALITY
Cairns make the most varied sounds of all Canines. One of the sounds my dogs make is howling. If one starts, the others join in - too cute! ESCAPE ARTIST
On January 7, 2012, she figured out how to open the kitchen gate and found me in my bedroom. Imagine my surprise! When I hear little paw steps, I wonder why is coming to see me - usually it is Belles or Tazz. The door gate was not attached to the wall or between a door way, but a gate which she could squeeze through - but a movable gate. What is the cure? If a puppy knocks the gate over and it crashes, it will scare them. They will stop trying to get out! Loud sounds make an impression on them. They have several periods growing up when they came become scared while I raise them, so I just have to know these time periods and not teach them new loud noises at that time.
HIDING
She also likes to get into my closet any time the door is cracked. Since the dogs stay in my bathroom at times, my rugs are on the closet floor. I have found her many times on my rugs - just loving it! They also go DOWN UNDER! When you cannot find them, look under a sofa or a bed!
TV WATCHING
Now, she has become a TV addict! She will lay on the sofa arm watching TV until it is time to bark at an animal, or she will sit below the TV looking up until an animal gears into action.
About March 2013, she noticed the large screen TV. I decided to move it from another room into the study. The smaller TV's didn't seem to make an impression on her. While watching Westminister on the large screen, a large dog caught her attention. She didn't have problem with the small dogs. Next, we noticed a large animated cartoon elephant walked across the screen. Now life has never been the same. Every time an animal appears on the screen, the girl goes crazy! Her sister KC started this soon after she left our house. It seems more dogs are having the same problem with the big screens TVs. [I would recommend them growing up around the large screen. If you have a smaller screen, I would not change sizes until they are around 3 years old.] Belles even recognized an iron cut out of a hog from some reality show - not that she has ever seen a hog. Her recognition of animals is quiet amazing! And you don't want to be in the area when cats appear on the screen. It is strange when she saw a real cat at Julie's place it didn't bother her at all. We are working on correcting her fascination with the TV commercials!
JUMPING
Before her TV days, she learned to jump on the back of the sofa at Sharlene's house. In March 2012, we left her with Sharlene and Bart while we went to Hawaii to visit family. Unfortunately, I had started leash trying her in the neighborhood. From walking outside in our neighborhood, she caught something from the sidewalk and had to be hospitalized for a week. This is due to people not picking up poop and walking their sick dogs through the neighborhood. Sharlene went over and picked up our little sick puppy and took care of her until she was well. Rowdy and Treasure welcomed her home to their house while we were gone. Before we returned, Rowdy taught her how to walk on the back of the sofa. Colorado Bella (2009 litter) stayed at our house the longest (until after school was out). Bella is the only other sibling I know who liked to walk on the back of the sofa from our litters. Cairns seem to have great balance and have cat-like qualities.
PLAYING
Belles loved playing with Flopsie while she was growing up! They loved doing the CAIRN RUN through our shrubs and yard! They also loved digging through our sandy dirt and hunting moles! Flopsie taught her how to jump 3 foot fences. I never thought I would have to worry about Belles jumping fences. Flopsie has a longer leg than Belles. With Belles being so close to the ground, I never worried until one day - then, I found both of the two girls in flower beds behind the fence tilling my flower beds! After Flopsie went to live with Amy, I continued to have to hunt for Belles. She would get herself in the flower bed, but couldn't get herself out. The first part on 2013, I saw Belles fly over the fence. She could finally get herself out without my help.
In June 2013, Flopsie came for a visit. Since Belles was pregnant, Belles didn't play much like they in recent days. Chase took up the slack playing with Flopsie!
There are several reasons I always put my Cairns up before leaving to do errands. First, people steel dogs. Second, they become so focused on squirrels they will forget to drink water. Third, they could accidently dig out of the fence. Fourth, they can get into so many tight spaces they can get hurt.
BALLS
She isn't the ball fanatic like her mother CoCo. Give her the command to JUMP, and she will jump straight up - very high (past my waist) - to get the ball out of my hand.
TOYS
She hasn't tried to shred stuffed toys to get the squeakers out like CoCo. I don't buy many expensive toys anymore. I found Cairn puppies prefer water bottles (remove all caps and rings), cardboard boxes, and paper towel rolls made of cardboard.
EATING
Belles has always had a healthy appetite. She will let you know when it is time to eat! While nursing the puppies, if she sees food coming her way, she leaps out of the puppy bed and woofs down her food!
CAIRNS - They are funny puppies/dogs which you will enjoy and laugh at throughout their whole lives. They are for more active people and are not lap dogs! Their energy level doesn't change much during their lives. Remember, you have to be able to keep up with them!
