09-30-13 Cairn Tails

None of my puppies have done this before, but it was so cute.

Sweetpea was pulling on Dolly's tail.  She knows the Cairn Tail Secret!  Too funny!

I hope she does it again.  I think I got a snippet on video!

With all the rain in Saturday and Sunday, I have two puppies who are eager to get outside and run, run, and run!

When they are bored, we have a ton of paper shredding going on in the house - especially with two puppies!  They are double the mess!

09-27-13 The Wizard of Oz

Sweetpea really surprised me this morning.

After completing the list of supplies and training links for everyone, I let the puppies out.  It was later than usual when they would go out.  They just worn themselves out streaking through the yard.

Sweetpea has really grown since staying later with us and the dogs.  She would bark at anything new.  Today, she went outside and went through my agility equipment like it wasn't even there!

I knew she had BRAINS because she does her SIT and DOWN so well - just like the Scarecrow.
I knew she had a HEART because she loves us to pick her up and love on her - just like the TIN MAN.
Now, she is BRAVE - just like the LION!

No wonder they used a Cairn Terrier in the movie!

Video to follow.

09-23-13

I was away from the house from 8:00 to 3:30.  I was so glad I had the pens for the kids and didn't have to worry about getting back to them.  They were a little hungry since they didn't have lunch at 12.  I just adjusted their schedule this particular day.  They were still served three meals.

After playing with them and getting dinner, I was finally able to have enough time to start walking again from 8:00PM to 9:00PM.  The eight weeks with the puppies seem to get shorter and shorter, but it doesn't leave much time for anything else.

09-22-13

We hope to make it through Sunday with enough paper for the pens!  It rained so hard on Friday that I was not able to get to the other side of town to buy more paper.

Going to church today - everything seems under control with our Cairns!

09-24-13 The Four Paws

Today, we have been outside.  The trash trucks were to arrive at 9AM, and they are late.  I'm still waiting at 10.   I'm watching the puppies from my bedroom window.  They have such a great time playing together.  They are listening to the train come through blowing its horn.  This only happens twice a week.  I thought I wouldn't like it, but love listening to the hum of the engine and the whistle blowing!

The kids are streaking through the yard playing and having fun.  They are able to get really tired from all the play.  But guess what, you can hardly ever wear out a Cairn.

I remember two times.  We took Tazz to a festival in Atlanta to get her use to people.  By the time we left, we were carrying her.  We also took Flopsie on the trail in Tyler.  Steve had to carry her.  They were much older than the pups, but these were the only two times we have truely worn out a Cairn.  Both Tazz and Flospie weren't a year old yet when this happened!

We also donned our leashes this morning and drug them through the garden.  Sweetpee felt the need (like so many Cairns) to walk Dolly with her leash!

I could tell the kids were getting tired.  It is still to the point that I can carry both of them into the house at the same time.  I now let them walk from the utility room to the outside by themselves - now that Sweetpea isn't afraid to go over the door threshold.

So, I pick them up and just was I get into the utility room when I slip and hit my left knee.  But the kids are fine - they just had another experience!  Next, I go and check to see if the trash trucks came and CoCo didn't make me aware of the fact (which would be a miracle - that does happen from time to time).  No, the trash is still in the trash can!  Just as I get down there, I hear the trucks again!  I quickly run into the house and grab the kids to put them outside on the grass.  Now, I am very calm around them like nothing is going to happen.

Sweetpea hears them and runs for shelter under the porch.  Guess what??  She knows the word COOKIE already - just found that out!  I call - Sweetpea COOKIE.  Here she comes from the porch to the yard!  She stayed there beside me, but she is getting exposed to the sounds now.

Hello Dolly on the other hand.  Nothing bothered her!!  She has the true Cairn attitude!  I was looking at pictures of her from the birth day.  She was lighter.  She has actually become darker.  She has a little silver in her.  I would keep her for breeding if I could.   I love her color and always wanted a Cairn as black as she is.  I think she would be a great mom, but she is going to make someone a great pet!

Before heading out to the great outdoors, the four paws demolished a potty pad (I thought was held down by a brick).  I layer their pens, and didn't think they would be able to get to the pad.  I was wrong again!  They had too much fun together.  There was cotton flying everywhere!  This is when they went outside for the first time this morning.

The four paws also have a great time digging in my flower beds.  Now, they have discovered they can go down the trench I dug for new sprinklers.  They have a great time digging in the trench which is great because Steve will probably want it deeper!

At 10:45AM, they are taking a nap!

I was just loving them.  Their heads are still so small.  They still fit in the palm of my hand.  Plus, they are small enough, I can still carry two of them at one time!

2:31PM - Dolly and Sweetpea woke from their naps.  Both went out to the grass to potty!  Yeah!  Then, Dolly even pooped!

Sweetpea was sitting on the ledge of our garden.  I went into the house to get my camera.  She was still there, so I was able to get a great picture.  Dolly saw me with the camera.  She got under Sweetpea and just sat down.  Perfect shot of the two of them!  It was so amazing!

2:43PM - Dolly understands when I call her in the house she doesn't want to come and give up playing outside!  Sweetpea will come in, but reluctantly.  Tomorrow, we will work on the COME command going into the house.  I will call them over and over into the house giving them different types of treats!

09-21-13

This has been a busy week.  I have been trying to catch up on my yard work!  On Thursday, I was clipping shrubs from 8AM to 1PM.  Of course, I planned it this way.  The mowers came and I could get them to do the hard work - getting rid of all the mess!  I had them take down limbs on trees also!  It was a very big mess.  Hopefully, I will be able to finish this week.   Then, our sprinkler control box messed up last week and had to price them.  It could cost $500 just to replace it.  It was on sale on Friday at Lowe's for under $100.  Steve will install and I will be his assistant to learn!  I also dug trenches to put in sprinklers in the flower beds.  With more new houses coming into the neighborhood, the sprinkler system has to be run at a different time than all the other neighbors due to water pressure.  Guess I am going to have to go down and speak with the city next!  I had my cabinets and shelving repaired about Flopsie and Belles decided on their own to redesign my cabinets!  I have repainted the utility cabinets plus my kitchen cabinets.  Now, I have to repaint the red paint (usually 6 layers) around the cabinets and places on the wall.  I guess this will have to wait until all the puppies are out of the house!

So, Sweetpea and Dolly have now been playing in the yard and entertaining themselves!  It is so great to have your Heartworm pills, so you can get out ant play.  It is great for them to have each other and wear themselves out.  I had to go and actually put water on their tongues, at the water bowl, to show them where to go and find water.  Strange - they found it in the house without a problem!

Friday was spent cleaning the kitchen floor and utility room floor.  Now, I just have the breakfast nook and the master bathroom to finish!  The floors look so much better.  I put a  3 coats of sealer on them to shine them up, but couldn't do this when the puppies were learning to walk.  It would have been too slick for them.

Went to Debra's Sip and See party for Maggie on Thursday night!  Maggie is doing well.

Hope I will have time to get more cute pictures of the girls!  This is a good reason to teach them to SIT , DOWN, STAY - pictures go so much better!  They are so fast and moving so quickly - even my "fast" camera has problems getting them.  I have plenty of action packed blurry pictures!

Sweetpea has figured out she cannot out run Dolly.  So, she just lays in the grass and watches for her to pounce.  My Tazz does this.  It reminds us of the Pink Panther movies!

Sweetpea gets tangled in the vines and does this little bunny hop to get through the vines.  They both are acting like my adults.  Just running through all the shrubs - here - there - everywhere!

While cleaning the floors, I put them in separate crates in the study.  They did very well!  I have moved their pen back into the utility room, so I will be putting them in their crates to eat.  Then, I will be able to control both of them more and take them outside.  I will give them a treat and say potty immediately - giving them a treat!  This is the only way I can work on outdoor training - two at a time.  These kids are too sneaky in the house.  I turn my back and it is done!  Very hard to catch them and reward immediately.  When I'm not with them, they go back to their pen to be together.  They need to learn to have their own space now!

I have my crates on wheels, so I can take them to the rooms where I am to be able to watch them.  They will sleep in the crate.  It is so sweet to watch them.  They are precious!

Now, I'm listening to Kim Kommando and sorting my pictures of the puppies.  At least, it is easier these days to sort the individual pictures of the puppies - just light and dark now!

It is so interesting to see them roam the yard!  The first day was rough for all the puppies, but it only took one spill!  They learn so quickly.  It is so fun to watch them on the steps.  If only I could get them to stand still.  it makes the best shot!  Dolly and Sweetpea are very aware where they are at all times.  Dolly is faster and stops herself before anything bad happened - just like Grandma CoCo!  Dolly reminds me of CoCo so much!

Strange how Sweetpea is so similar to Flopsie and Dolly like Coco!

I wonder how many videos and pictures I have taken of this litter.  It takes a ton of time to sort and look through the video to post.  When viewing the video, I have to do in MUTE mode.  My adults are in the room and go bonkers if they hear the puppies - especially the mom - this time Belles!

I still have some baby pictures to sort because they look so much alike.  I have to put them in a collage to sort and look at their features!  I really try and get the color collars on them ASAP - saves me time with the pictures!  I did found out that I need smaller ones for the first borns!  Their necks are so, so small!

Going to have to go back and put together pictures in a collage when they were born to now!  What a difference!

Puppies have been out 3 or 4 times today with Aunt Tazz, Grandma CoCo, and Mama Belles.  It seems I just create more work by photographing the puppies.  Think I was able to get some cute pictures today.

Hello Dolly is going to be a great Cairn!  She is so fun, but a sprinter!  She is going to need a very active family!  She is so alert.  I was trying to get her picture by the ferns.  After just one time of telling her to SIT, she kept sitting to get more treats for more pictures!  What a girl!

Sweetpea is so funny!  It takes her a little longer to get someplace compared to Dolly, but she shows up!  It is so great to be able to see both personalities emerge and develop.  They stayed out while the neighbor was mowing.  It doesn't both Sweetpea anymore!

09-17-13

Puppies are in the back yard playing again!  While they were out there, I was trying to fill in the holes where grass should be.  I'll be using my mess again to put over the holes after I find more dirt to patch them.

The puppies loved falling into the holes and hiding!  Dolly would fall in on purpose to lose Belles.  Belles has really taken to Dolly.  She loves to play with her, but warts her to death.  Grandma CoCo liked playing a little.  We hope she will become more playful with them.  They love to follow her around.

I'm going to spray the shrubs for mosquitos today.  Heart worm pills probably need time to build up in their system, so we want to be careful with them.  Most mosquitos are usually out at night - not as many during the day.

Debra says Maggie's ear finally went up!  Good going Maggie!  We didn't have to resort to tape!

Sweet pea and Dolly love to romp through the grass and dirt - very Cairn!

Funny - The washing and drying has slowed down a ton.

Belles is going wild.  She feels good!

Hope all the little puppies are doing well!

Will try and post pictures soon!

09-16-13

Today, the 2 went outside more.  They were already experts from going outside the last several days climbing the steps.  Now, they know the path and yard playing by themselves or with the other dogs.

I worked outside all day to get my dying plants back into the ground and fix the flower beds, so the dogs wouldn't dig them up all day.  I also dug three trenches for new sprinklers.  I hope this helps Steve, and he can get them put in this weekend.  Then, I covered the trenches and flower beds with my fencing mesh to protect my work from my kids!

I won't be able to defeat the mole, but maybe I can prevent all this sand from coming into my house!

About 4pm, I had to get a quick shower and go to town to run errands!  We needed food in the house or it would be a problem to get dinner!

09-14-13 The Big Day

Happy Birthday my little litter of 5!  This is a happy and sad day for us.  3 of the 5 are going home.  We will be busy clipping 80 toe nails, giving 5 baths, cutting 10 ears, clipping 5 tails, and around 20 paws!

They are all up and active.

Little Joe finally ate his heartworm pill (the pills are too large)!  Sweet pea ate 1/2 of her pill.  Dolly is absolutely not interested!

We had a visitor this morning.  I met her in her lamp shop in Tyler. Guess what I saw in the lamp shop?  Her Cairn Terrier.  She came to visit the puppies this morning before they left!

By 12:00, I was finally able to start washing the puppies.  Thank goodness, they dry quickly!

We visited with Little Joe's parents from about 1:30pm to past 3pm.  As they were leaving, our husbands found they had the same major in college.  So that started another conversation.  Mary and I could have talked all day!  This was there first visit to our house.

Amanda and her mom came for Zoey!  This was Amanda's second visit to the house.  We took a ton of pictures especially of Maggie and Zoey!

I went over my 20 items to share with each family.  Each had Cairns previously.  From the past experience, every one forgets in 13 or more years what it is like to have a Cairn puppy.  So, we go through many categories as quickly as we can!

Showed everyone how to make their puppies SIT, DOWN, COME, and FOLLOW!  They only had 4 training sessions on SIT and DOWN.  They all learned really fast and remember everything!  Very smart puppies!

Then, there were two!

09-13-13

It is Sept 13, 2013.  The puppies were born on July 13, 2013.  Sometimes, it feels like it has been such a short period of time to watch them grow and develop their personalities.  At this moment, they have worn me out this morning, and they still have more energy to play!

This is our last full day together with the puppies and Belles.

We were up at 5:30AM.  I put them in the utility room to clean up their pen.  They played and played!  Belles came to see them.  I let her into the room.  I thought she won't stay long, but she go them lined out and continued to play with them.  When she left, she stole their new pink ball!  I put her in the kitchen with the three puppies leaving tomorrow.  Not much happened.  Then, I put Tazz in their for more socialization.  She growled.  I'm going to be posting the video of her growling because it will give you an idea of how to growl at your puppy when it needs correction.  Don't say NO- NO-NO to them. In their world, it doesn't mean much.  They speak another language.  They understand happy tones and deep tones.  Make your growl deep and your fun times with them use your happy voice!  If you want them to learn, make it fun and light hearted.  They will shutdown if you don't, then you and the puppy become frustrated.

After Tazz, I came up with a new game for them because I couldn't get them going!  See video.  I have been trying to find more of the toy I used because the last litters loved it.  Koa was the alpha and would lead her pack around the island playing with it.  Not this group.

I have also used the gas can on correcting their tearing up their potty pads today.  For awhile, they seemed to get the message.  They have periods where you don't want to do anything to scare them or they could become shaky dogs.  You can use it to your advantage.  We were at my parent's house and Flopsie tried to dart after a car.  She was in one of her fear periods.  I reacted to keep her safe.  She became scared of cars.  This was great because I don't think she would chase a car, but she didn't like getting into a car.  She became car sick due to her fear.  Flopsie went to live with Amy in January.  Just before she went, I tried a thundershirt on her.  And it worked!  Amy took it from there and took her places.  Flopsie had an association of bad things with the car and me.  Amy says she is great in the car now.  So, this shows you had behaviors develop, and they can be changed.  It just takes work!

I put their new collars on them this morning.  You will have to watch the clasp.  I think they are making them cheaper and cheaper.  This brand is ZACK and ZOEY.  I wouldn't recommend them.  I also don't think these will last as long as they should because they will out grown them.  Let me know what you think later.  It says it adjusts from 6 inches to 10 inches.  Maggie and Zoey should end up with a size 14" collar.  The others are smaller and will probably be a little less and maybe harder to fit.

It is funny.  I just realized I call Belles - Sweet pea when she comes in the door!

I will be emailing your receipts to you today.  Just bring cash for the small balance for the shots.  I went ahead and got purchased a heart worm pill.  I will show you how I give it to them when you pick them up.  They will be getting a puppy gift and a box to play with at home!  When you visit you vet, you will need to get another pill for next month.  The third month they take their heart worm pill  - you should be able to buy a whole package for a 6 month supply.  The pills go on weight.

Your puppy will need to be fixed around 6 months before their hormones develop.  You will find the vet charges by weight when they have surgery and getting their teeth cleaned.   This is a good incentive to keep them trim.  I suggest getting a measuring cup and placing it in their food, so you don't over feed them or anyone who feeds them for you.

The puppy manual is almost complete.  I will get your contracts ready today, then work on the manual more - if I have time.  I am going to try and get good pictures of them today out in the yard.  Consider the manual in rough draft form, but it gave me a deadline to get it written.  If you have any suggestions, please let me know.  I will try and to continually improve it for the next litter!

If you have any questions in the puppy manual, don't hesitate to text, email, or call me!  Nearly everyone has questions during their first year - especially when you are getting use to them and their personality!

We went for our shots yesterday.  Both times, no one had a problem with the shots.  Make sure your vet uses a small needle behind their neck - not in their rump.  I was told vets who use less expensive vaccines will place the shot in their rump.  This happened to Flopsie.  She was so sore.  These puppies just came home and played both times.  You never knew they had shots at all!

8:30AM - I had their pen all cleaned up.  While I was on the computer, I heard what I didn't want to hear.  They had a grand time in their pen tearing up all the paper I just put in the pen!!  It is trash day.  I had already put the trash down, but I have another small can to take out there now!

Maybe, I can get my breakfast now!  Everyone else is fed.  Chase and Belles were telling me the neighbor's moving van showed up, so they had to come in the house.

It is a sad week for me because the puppies are leaving and my great neighbor is moving to Galveston today.

2:40PM Cheryl came over with her husband.  He has been wanting to see Cairn puppies for awhile.  They helped me take pictures, then I tried to get more pictures after they left.  I love to take cute pictures of them.  It seems I haven't had the time.  This was our first summer litter, and it may be the last!  Anyway, the puppies seem to be worn out because they are very quite!

When I was getting things together for tomorrow, I noticed the heart worm pills were different.  They are large pills which need to be chewed.  I tried to give Hello Dolly and Sweetpa their pills, but they wouldn't eat them.

So, I tried Maggie.  She ate hers - of course!  LOL!

09-12-13

5:30AM - Up and going!

7:00AM - Finally had to put Maggie and Zoey back in the pen (after the cabinet problem).  The other 3 didn't want to stay in the utility room. by themselves.  Belles came in and played with Dolly and Sweetpea.  She really loves playing with Dolly.  The others will get chances to play by themselves before they leave with Belles.

Little Joe - Going to have to watch him with doors.  He has loved going behind the utility room door for a couple of weeks.  I place a small plastic container by between the door and my hanging rods.  This seems to have kept him from going back there.  He may get that honestly.  Belles loves opening my closet door and checking it out.  CoCo will open the partial closed study door and walk right into it.

Zoey - Going to have to watch her with the cabinets.  CoCo loved climbing in my open cabinets and so does Zoey!  Zoey is taking it to the Flopsie stage.  She was trying to chew on my refurnished cabinets!  Then, Zoey went to the sink and tried to get the baseboards to play with her!  Then, Maggie joined her!

While I"m sitting here writing this, CoCo is beside me and Tazz at my feet on my bed.  CoCo chewed
up Tazz's brand new football.  Tazz loves a football and use to play football with my sister's Schnauzer.    Tazz would run with the football in her mouth and Lucas would chase her!  And they would tackle!  It was too funny!  It is really hard to find soft footballs anymore.  I found some really cheap ones for about a dollar and purchased several for Tazz.

The kids have been their pens chewing on plastic bottles.  Suddenly, there is silence.  I left Belles in there to eat breakfast and puppy sit.  Need to go check on them.  Too quiet!

7:30AM - Working on the puppy manual, so I can make copies tomorrow for you of the First Edition!

2:30PM - Debra met me at the vet's office.  The puppies were great!  No one cried again!  This is the first litter no one has cried at all - both times!

We worked on our SITS and DOWNS tonight.  Everyone is so smart!  I only had problems with Dolly - she just wouldn't down.  I try to start this early because DOWN is the hardest command for them since it requires them to be submissive.

09-11-13 Videos

09-11-13 - Zoey Video with Basketball; The Washer

6:35AM - We were up and cleaning up a mess.  The kids are going full blast today!

6:43AM - Maggie had been getting on her throne again.  She discovered it about 2 days ago.  She was the only one who could climb up on this plastic box.  Today, Sweetpea just climbed up on the throne!  She was so proud of herself!  She jumped off without fear, then tried to get back up.  Of course, my battery was down on my video camera at the moment she discovered she could do it!

Our schedule was off yesterday.  My neighbor is moving, and spent most of the day with her.  They ate late last night, so their was a ton of poop this morning.

They are running on high energy this morning since they only had playtime in the morning and evening and none during the day.  Plus, it seems everyone got along.  They were very calm when I got back last night - very usual!

7:41AM - Hello Dolly has had a big morning.  She climbed onto Maggie's throne also!  Then, she started turning her cute little head!  She will make great pictures!  My little sleepy heads (Tazz and CoCo) are finally getting up.  Belles and Chase have already eaten and out exploring the world!

The puppies are turning their boxes on their sides which is probably safer.  Maggie was on her throne, then looked at the box.  I could just read her mind.  "I'm going to jump from my throne into that box!"  Yikes.  I turned the box on its side then!

Little Joe and Hello Dolly was in a box today!  I just cannot get all these cute moments!  I need a video cam of them!

All of a sudden, they all stopped.  They have heard the washer and dryer forever.  All of a sudden, all of them turn their backs on me to face the washer.  It was draining!

I'll have to post the video - too funny.

Zoey was on the bottom shelf in the utility room.  She jumps off and Maggie jumps off and lands of her!

9:24PM  Belles wrestling with her mom (CoCo) on my bed and all over my bedroom!  Something has gotten into Belles since having those puppies!  She never played with CoCo like she does now!

09-10-13

I have so many great videos of the kids.  I wish I could get them all to you.  I hope to put them together with my new computer later, so you can see how they grew up.  I like to provide you video because I wish I could have seen my dogs grow up.  You have so many questions after you get them.   Did they show this behavior when they were younger?  What were like with their siblings? Etc.

When you get your puppies, the one thing to remember is patience.  If you get up tight, they will get up tight and no progress will be made - especially during training.  Their progress just cannot be rushed.

I started training them yesterday on SIT and DOWN which I will show you.  You want them to recognize you as pack leader in your household because you will be forming a new pack with them.

They are playing well in the utility room this morning. It has become very quiet in there - that is when I worry.  They come out of their pens in the morning like little firecrackers!  They are loving their boxes which I will send one home with them - don't let me forget.  It gives them something solid to sink their teeth into instead of your cabinets!

Belles goes to check on them from time to time.  In the morning, she cannot wait to go to the gate and count them!

CoCo looks at them.  She went in and stole a rawhide chew from them.  She has no shame!

I added more to yesterday's blog!

I hope this blog will help you to be ready for your puppies and you will share your experiences with me as they grow up!

They are all so loving and want to be picked up all the time which doesn't happen with all terriers.  Terriers are very independent.  When you get them home, keep taking them to the sofa with their chew sticks.  This way you are teaching them to snuggle up with you.  Both Flopsie and Belles loved to get up on the sofa with me.  Belles served as my pillow at times until she discovered the large TV.  Now, she is a TV addict!  If we turn off the TV, then she goes back to the wonderful snuggly state!

From the time you get your puppy, you will be training them and getting them into your routine.  Remember, to talk to your puppy - they love it - especially on a walk!

I put the puppies back in the pen.  It was very quite in the utility room.  I put their boxes in both areas for them to crawl in and go to sleep.  I won't leave the boxes in the pens when I leave the house because they could move it, jump on it, and try to jump over the top of the pen.  I put their toys to snuggle up in for sleeping.

Sweetpea was trying to get her plastic hanger into her box - too cute!

Hello Dolly is sleeping in her box.  Her little feet are dangling outside the box!  Too cute!

This is interesting - most of the puppies are getting silver down their noses!  Little Joe has something special (last time I looked), he has a silver Go -T.

Old Dogs Can Learn New Tricks - Tazz (who is 11 years old) has learned to COME when called recently.  She was my apartment dog with the stubborn terrier attitude!  She also watched CoCo learn to PLAY DEAD (which is complex).  Do you know she just did it one day by herself?  She wanted a treat like CoCo was getting, and she loves doing the trick!

09-09-13

5:30 AM - They were up very early today.  They were fed.

9:30AM - Zoey decided to invoke her Alpha status today in the pen.  She started picking on everyone.  I removed her from her litter mates and put her in the utility room.  She is playing happily in the utility room by herself.  At 9 weeks, the litter mates can get grouchy with each other.  Everyone else is tired of playing and has gone to sleep!  It is nice a quiet in the pen at this time.

After about 10 minutes Zoey went back to the puppy pen and went to sleep.  She was pouting some because she went down to the other end to sleep by herself.

10:45AM - Returned from errands.  Everything was nice and quiet.  Zoey was on the same end of the pen as the other puppies!

11:00 - 11:25AM - We just started learning our SITS and DOWNS this morning.  It always amazes me how quickly these Cairns learn!  Everyone did wonderful!

11:41AM - Working at the bar while waiting for the puppies to eat and play in the utility room.  Little Joe just cocked his head to the side when I spoke to him.  My Tazz does does her head that way when I talk to her.  It makes for cute pictures!

Zoey had another problem last night.  She is great by herself in the utility room.  She knows how to entertain herself with the toys.  She doesn't seem to get bored playing by herself.  In Zoey's defense, the litter mates start getting tired of each other starting in the 9th week.  Zoey just moved up the date!

Took Little Joe and Zoey into the study to watch TV on the sofa.  Both loved to snuggle.  Zoey was sound asleep on me with Steve called me from the grocery store (I had to wake her).  Both liked chewing on their little sticks while with me.

09-08-13

This morning, I asked Steve to watch the puppies play in the utility room while I went to shower and get ready for church.

When I returned, the kitchen was full of Cairns - large and small!

Grandma CoCo, Mama Belles, and even Chase were in the kitchen.  I never put Chase in with the puppies because he really doesn't want anything to do with them.  You have to watch the males.  Belles has calmed down in the last few weeks and doesn't mind the other dogs visiting with the puppies now.  Thank goodness!

Sweetpea is still trying to get milk from Mama Belles.  The other day  - a few of them tried to get milk from CoCo!

Belles is more firm with them than CoCo was.  For awhile, I could only put one or two puppies with Belles.  If I put more, they would all gang up on her and attack her for milk.   She can handle one or two and tell them - NO!  She just flops down on her belly, so they cannot get it.  CoCo would look at me.  I would have to tell her to tell them NO, and she would give them the mama growl.

It is funny  how CoCo and Belles move them around teaching them with their noses and body.  I don't know if I have posted any of that video, but will try to get more after I saw them playing this morning.

Something has happened with this litter!  There has been a change!  A good change!

They aren't pooping as much!  Aren't you lucky!  They are getting more on a schedule of eating and pooping and that is it!  Not all day long!

They have also decided to be more clean in their pens!  You are lucky again!  They are actually sleeping on the carpet end of the pen!  Maybe didn't like all the baths they were getting  and decided to CLEAN up their act!  Ha!

Sweetpea is getting more brave this week!

Maggie actually waited to poop.  She didn't poop in the utility room and went to the papers in the pen to poop!  She is making decisions now!  Yeah - Maggie!

Most are pooping and pottying on the potty pad - when they aren't tearing it up - that hasn't changed - when they are in the utility room playing on their own!

They seem to know their names!  I was letting them out of the gate yesterday by calling their names!

They follow very well.  When they reach 6 months, watch out!  They start becoming their own person and will notice more things and will start running away to chase things.  Just have them follow you around the house and ALWAYS keep them on a leash outside if they aren't in a fence.  They will stay at your heels - just don't step on them.   They can get under foot at this time.

Hello Dolly has very quick fast twitch muscles.  She is a runner and the fastest one in the litter!

Little Joe is going to be very fast like Hello Dolly!  Need to watch him around 6 months!

All could escape the front door very quickly especially Hello Dolly and Little Joe since they are so fast!  The best one to greet people at the front door is to put them on a leash, so they cannot get out the door.

Everyone is learning to stay behind the gate and let me out first.  I just tell them BACK (so they back up).  Belles and Radar were bad at this.  Belles still needs to learn to let me pass first.  There are always opportunities with Cairns!

Maggie has one ear up and still one floppy ear.  She is really working on getting her ear up before going home!

They do love to play with each other.  After they get their last shots, they need to come into contact with other dogs.  Training classes are a good way to socialize them.  They really look forward to getting out of the house and seeing other dogs.  Unfortunately,  there seems to be some new dog flu which you need to read about or ask your vet.  I'm going to do the same thing.  I'll post some links on the blog - probably next week.

I will taking them for their shots this week!  I will let you know how much the shots are and you can pay me when you pick them up.

I would really make sure I have a pen for them if you are working or out of the house for long periods of time.  I have just had my cabinets repaired in my utility room and don't want any one chewing on them again.  When you think you can trust them, you cannot.  We left Flopsie (8 months) to go on a trip in the utility room with CoCo.  When we returned, she had eaten through the cabinets!  It seems she was very mad we left her!

We will be taking a ton of pictures this week!  I hope to have some great pictures to share with you.  This will be the first time I will take them outside due to weather conditions.  I have some fun ideas for the pictures and hope the turn out well.

Now, I'm going to get back to my puppy manual I'm writing for you!

6:12PM - Zoey has been finding her voice!  She was barking at the new toy I left in the utility room - The BIG GREEN EGG (will post video later tonight).

6:47PM - Zoey is barking again at the BIG GREEN EGG!  Then, she starts attacking my boxes I put in the cabinet, so she couldn't climb in and eat my refurbished cabinets!

6:50PM - Maggie jumped up on the small gray plastic box to play with Sweetpea.  She cannot figure out how to get down.  Maggie is tilting her head with her one floppy ear when I take her picture!  Too cute!  We let her out to take a picture of her ears outside.  Her first stop was to check out the food bowl!  What a Cairn!!

7:45PM - Little Joe was getting after the rag bone I stuck in the pet fence!  He was growling and talking to it!  I do think he is tired of all these girls!  I put him out in the kitchen floor with Belles for awhile.

9:14PM - Debra just left from her visit with Maggie.  All puppies were picked up and loved!  Debra was able to see Little Joe go and potty on the pad.  I went to get the treat as I was telling him - Good Job Little Joe.  Debra said he was running to the gate to get his treat!  Good job Little Joe!!!

9:43PM - The wild children have been put to bed.  They haven't gone to sleep.  Maggie is licking Sweetpea's ear like crazy.  Maggie is also pulling up he carpet which Debra and I just put in the pen!

09-07-13 Happy 8 Week Birthday little puppies!

Wow - 8 weeks ago - on July 13, 2013 our cute little babies were born!  I will be seeing some of you next weekend to pick up your puppies.  We need to schedule your pick-up times!

The time had gone toooooo fast!  I'm going to make the most of my last week with this litter!

7:00-9:00AM - Mommy got up and fed us in the utility room.  We have played all over the utility room.  We don't like Mommy to leave us in the utility room by ourselves, so we trap her.  We all surround her feet.  When we bit her toes, she gives us this sound.  We know it means not to do it anymore.  After one day, we know not to tug on her nightgown anymore.  She says getting through the utility room in like walking through land mines because of all of us, our food dishes, and our toys!  Mommy cleaned up our pen which was a disaster.  Don't tell her we told, but she made a fatal mistake last night.  She left the plastic draw bridge down, and we couldn't cross to the other side of our fence!  So, we slept in one carpet side and pooped in the other side.  We heard her tell us we were really good puppies and she couldn't believe there wasn't any poop on our potty side of the pen.  Then, she realized what had happened!  She cleaned up the pen - down to the sheets today.

For the pen, she puts down plastic first (like a thick shower curtain).  She makes sure this is secured with blue painter's tape.  Next, she puts down the potty pads.  Then, she puts down an flat sheet with the fold on one side and the open side past the pen, so we cannot get between the sheets.  She gets packing paper and puts it down. Then, we get our carpet on top of the paper in two areas of our pens.  She just leaves the packing paper exposed on the potty side of the pen.  She also recycles the paper from our play/sleeping area.  We have a few puddles on that side, so it can be reused.  She also wants us to smell the paper, so we know what side of the pen to sleep on!

Mom insisted on another bath.  Zoey had very dirty front feet.  Mom had to really wash between her toes and get the dried poop out between she pads on her feet.  Dolly tried to climb out of the sink and washtub.  Little Joe and Sweetpea were very good.  And I tried to jump out of the sink!  Mommy is very experienced and knows how to handle us in a sink.  She suggests others wash their puppies in the dishpan in the tub - it is less risky!  Since we are very quick puppies, you would never take your eyes off of us or we could break our necks jumping from the sink to the floor!

Now, we are clean and playing in our pens growling at each other!  Zoey is really taking to the tennis ball!  Mom inserted our rag bones in our play pen for us to pull on when we get bored.  Another thing we do when we get bored is drink water.  So, you know what that means!

Mommy put in the car last night for a ride, and I complained the whole way there because Zoey wasn't with me.  Mom and I went over to visit my new mom Debra last night.  It looks like I'm going to have a new sister - her name is Ester.  She is a Siamese cat.  I don't think she likes me.  She threw many threats my way.  Well, I just kept wagging my tail.  Maybe, she will change her mind.  If not, I heard Mommy Debra say, so would be spending more time outside!  We did find out she knows the word treats and wanted some of mine!  Maybe Mommy Debra will need to use our word  - COOKIES!  Mommy Debra was so excited to see me.  Mommy ran around the island with me while Mommy Debra videoed the event.  When I got back, I told all my sisters and brother where we went and what I did.  Looks like like is going to be pretty exciting around there!

Mommy is going to let us watch Rick Steve's European Travels for part of our education today!

Well, it is really quiet in the kitchen now.  Guess I better get back there and take my nap with the rest of the gang.

Mommy made us boxes to create a maze today!  Mommy said I passed with flying colors.  My hint to all puppies is to follow your nose!  I just followed the treats and was able to go through the whole maize!

------------------------------------------------The Maggie Report ---------------------------------------------

09-05-13

2:30AM - Puppies were up and moving.  I could hear the Rooster crowing (squeaking) from my bedroom.  Wanted to get up and remove it from their pen, but I was afraid I would wake up Steve after all the puppies started talking to me!

7:00AM - Puppies were running around like crazy in the utility room while I cleaned their pen.  This was about the third day I let them run in the room by themselves.  Only one hit the potty pad the other day and today none!  Trying to catch each one going to the potty and give them a reward when they hit the mark, but these are sneaky little puppies.  They don't want anyone to watch them most of the time!

9:07AM - Belles is sitting on my bed talking to the TV while I work at the computer!

Weight

I weighed the puppies last night.  They should be around 4 lbs when you get them.  They were all 6.3 ounces when they were born!

5:06PM - Maggie has been in the computer room with me.  We have been working on her separation anxiety from the pack.  Maggie finally got comfortable and went to sleep.  Zoey has now joined me!  When these two fuss, I don't speak to them.  When they get quiet, then I speak to them and get them a treat to reinforce positive behavior.

6:03PM - Just noticed Zoey and Sweetpea have their ears all the way up!  Hello Dolly put hers up yesterday.  Maggie is my hold out!

Little Joe and Hello Dolly have both their faces in one bowl.  Zoey has claimed her bowl!

6:20PM - Letting them play in the utility room for awhile!  They love it!  Romping around!  Put out some new toys to entertain them!

All the little tongues are hanging out and panting after their romp in the utility room.

Sweetpea is always the one to get out the gate when it opens first (just like Radar in CoCo's first litter).

Little Joe and Hello Dolly loved growling and fighting over a toy tonight.  Even Sweetpea was in there trying to get the toy!

Well, had the pen cleaned.  Put the puppies back in.  After their run, they went into the pen and pooped - then stomped in poop!  Another foot bath for the puppies!  The good news is -- they waited to get into the pen to do their business instead of doing it on the utility room floor like they did before!

8:15PM - Joe is back in the computer room with me now!  He is a good boy - no fussing - just looking!

10:42PM - They are back in the utility room.  Sweetpea and Hello Dolly hit the potty pads.  We had 3 hits!  Then, Zoey hit this small piece of paper on the floor by the gate when she pooped!  Good job puppies!  Unfortunately, Maggie potted on the floor first thing!  Ooops, Joe did poop on the floor.

Collars - Be sure to check the collars from time to time.  At this stage, it should be a two person job.  Make it fun by giving them a treat while putting their collars on.  If you were getting a puppy that was not use to their collar, they would be trying to scratch it off all the time.

11:34PM - Went over to Debra's house and surprised her with a visit with Maggie!  Maggie met Ester (the Siamese cat)!  We have video - Ester was not happy with the visit.  Maggie cried going over there, but was too tired by the time we ran around the island to cry on the way back home.  Instead, she pooped in her carrier!

Puppies are running around like crazy in the utility room playing with each other.  They are full of energy!  We had at least two hit the potty pads tonight, but not Maggie.  Maggie decided the middle of the floor was the best place for her!  Here is a tip.  When going in to clean up the floor, take a decoy.  I take a wet paper towel for the poop or pea.  Then, I have a second towel in the other hand for them to go after!

11:56AM - They are all asleep and all in the clean end!  Yeah!  They slept much longer this morning because I put them to sleep late and wore them out before they went to sleep!

09-04-13

Today, we were up at 3:30AM again.  We were trying to be quiet, so we wouldn't wake Steve.  It seems he heard us anyway.

The were playing this morning!  They have really come alive in the last week!

Hint:  Take anything which can make noise out of their pen at night!

I put them in the utility room while I cleaned up their messes today.  They are enjoying the freedom of moving around.  I have placed a potty pad in there (which they haven't torn up yet).  This is a test to see if they will know what to do with it when they need it.  We don't know the answer yet, but we did see someone do something extra special yesterday.  There was one small piece of paper on the carpet side of the pen.  Do you know they were able to put the poop of that small piece of paper!  Wow!

8:30AM  While in the utility room for the second time today, they didn't go for my toes as much!  Maggie picked up the plastic hanger and started playing with it!  Belles loved playing with it as a kid!

We also listened to sounds again.  Everyone came up to the nail grinder and touched it with their noses!  Yeah!!  The blow dryer was on cool, but they are still a little intimidated by it - not scared!  The electric clipper (which is used on their feet or rear end) was fine.  Hello Dolly was the bravest when it came to the clipper.  She wanted to investigate first and Sweetpea didn't have a problem with it.  The alphas (Zoey and Maggie) had more problems!  Who would have thought they won't be as brave as the other two girls!

Little Joe came when he was called today!  He had laid down on the floor, and I was talking to him.  Then, said his name, and he came right to me!  What a good boy!  I do think he wants to be rescued from all the sisters!  It is more fun in a litter when there is one more boy for playing purposes.  This was our first little with only one boy.  Poor little guy.  He doesn't us picking him up and loving him!  Maybe he is begging for us to pick him up and get him away from the girls for awhile!

We are almost out of paper, so I need to get to the moving store today to pick up packing paper!

09-03-13

Well, we were up bright and early this morning.  At 3:30AM, I heard someone making sounds like they were choking.  When I got to their pen, nothing.

So, it was time to get to work and clean up.  Time to change the sheets (of paper) and get breakfast cooked for the kids!  They seemed hungry and knew they hadn't eaten all their food from last night.   I went ahead and gave them breakfast.

Went back to bed - not to sleep!  At 6:30AM, I heard  feet running back and forth in the pens and crunching and crackling paper!   They were having a great time!  I thought - this is a bad sign - Do I really want to go in there?

Answer:  I better or it could get worse!  It wasn't too bad, but I'm running out of my packing paper (which will be an errand today - get another large stack)!  Thank goodness, I have the two end rolls I picked up from the newspaper office!   I did learn they were cheap, but not consistent when or how many they will have.  Seems everyone in town knows about getting paper there - for moving, kids to paint on, puppies to potty on, etc!

They were out of breathe when I arrived at the pen and grinning!  Just having early morning fun!  They are more active and playing more together now!

I cleaned up and and gave them a little more food (see what happens when you get off schedule) - more work!

All of a sudden, I felt myself being pulled toward the pen.  I looked down and there was Hello Dolly with her teeth in my nightgown tugging me toward her!  I'm going to have to watch that girl.  She loves being picked up and getting attention!

Belles comes in every morning to count the kids.  She walks around the pen both ways to make sure everyone is fine.

I went back into to look at them.  I had given them some torn paper to play with on their carpet end.  Do you know someone had placed a poof on the carpet end on a little piece of paper!  Incredible!  They understand just having a problem staying out of the wrong end of the pen. Debra thought they might be hot.  So, I put a fan on them.

When they were in the Utility room, I thought also.  I have a ceiling fan I turned on, but it didn't make any difference.  I cannot explain the 5.  They just like laying on the paper instead of the carpet which is exact opposite of the other litters.

09-02-13 Labor Day and Food Issues

Have a great new name for Belles - MaBelles!  Get it?

Steve was holding Grandma CoCo and Ma Belles on the sofa.  Every time I went to take a picture of CoCo, she smiled!  Pictures to follow.  CoCo has never done that before.

Of course, Belles seems to have changed her personality after having the puppies!  She is playing and bothering CoCo more like she is a puppy (maybe this is her second childhood)!  She was quiet and hadn't had a personality totally emerge yet.

She has really had playing with CoCo which is good because CoCo needs to drop a few pounds.  We haven't been able to take walks in the last four months.  We didn't want to expose Belles to anything while she was pregnant outside the house, except for Fourth of July trip to Lubbock to see Steve's family.  We returned from the trip, and a week later we had puppies!  It wasn't the smartest thing to do, but we made it through the event.  But nevermore!

Debra came over to the house yesterday.  She is a realtor.  We were planning on having lunch, then going Maggie shopping.  Well, she had a call and had to go show a house.  So, we went Maggie shopping first, came home and cleaned up the pen and kids, then had dinner.  Debra helped me was them and showed her how to change fix up the pen.  After all, it is only 11 days before Maggie goes to live with her.

In fact, it wasn't a good sign when we saw the carpet from the puppy pen hanging on the fence in the driveway.  We knew there had been a major problem.  Steve said, he had to spray it off with the hose!
Hmmmmm....... Didn't ask any questions.  Knew it was bad because he had the Living Air turned on.

I had more puppy activities planned for the day - basically photo session - but we had some rain in the morning.  So, the photo session was cancelled.

Debra and I ended up making Peach Cobbler with Almond Flour and White Rice Flour instead of processed Wheat Flour.  Then, we tackled ice cream since we had more peaches.  We used Almond Milk and Heavy Whipping Cream (which was in the refrigerator because I put cream on my grocery list and didn't specify).  Of course, I didn't know Steve would be going to the grocery store for me, but he asked what he could pick up.  I had forgotten that I hadn't spelled it out.

Well, everything is an experiment these days trying not to use processed flour!

FOOD

I have been checking into the Blue Buffalo situation.

My vet indicated you could find reports out there on any company.  While at Petsmart, Debra and I spoke to the manager.  He said, it is very unlikely to have problems with the food.  When companies make enough food to distribute to stores like Petsmart, they have multiple plants where the food is made.  He stated, it is rare to have a problem, but it there is a problem they will pull it immediately from the shelves.  He indicated, it might be one pallet of food which goes to a particular store which actually has a problem and the media/internet blows it out of proportion.

Note:  The vet did state this food is richer than he would like to see.  This might explain why the poops aren't as firm as usual.

The vet said, if I'm not seeing a problem, then don't change the puppies' food.  You want to feed the puppies what the mother ate for at least nine months.  It upsets the flora and fauna in their digestive systems.  After nine months (without any problems with the food), then you can change.  But you need to do it slowly which will be covered in the CAIRN PUPPY MANUAL!

I try and feed them food which doesn't contain grain.  I have learned I'm allergic to Whole Wheat recently which I have been told by a DO isn't uncommon.  When you go off wheat products, there is a difference you begin to realize.  Before this, I stopped a long time ago feeding my dogs any grain products or products with fillers.

If you buy Old Roy in Wal-Mart, you will find your dog poops more.  With the better food, you won't have as much poop and will be taking care of your dog better.

09-01-13 Only 14 days left!

Worked in the garden again to defeat the 8 paw Cairn digging!  I'll post pics later.  Unfortunately, they continually have fun digging up my gardens with beach sand on this side of Tyler!

Came in and had to get a bath!  So, dirty and hot!  I continued to hear thunder, but nothing.

When I got out, it was pouring down.  Went in to talk to Steve and the puppies went wild.  They heard my voice and told me to get in there and give them some food!  Unfortunately, when they were eating, I was on cleanup duty again!  I just cannot keep up with them!

Dinner was served and pooped was thrown out!  Nice clean moving papers were put down.  They love the sound they make!  They are just hopping and tearing them up!

Picked each one up.  Sweetpea was last!  After I kissed her cute little head, it was awful.  She must have rolled over in something!  Yuck!  How could the sweet little dainty one do that to me?

If Maggie could reach my jugular, she would go for it!  Fortunately, I only have cuts all over my hands from her.  Then, Sweet little Sweetpea started pulling Maggie's act!  Oh no!

It really is hard at this stage to reach in and just get one.  Steve accidentally pulled up Maggie who was latched onto his hand the other day with other puppy.  Beware when you come to get your puppy!
